Floor Polish and Sanding for Timber Sports Floors

Sanding and polishing keep timber sports floors level and protected. We screen, sand and refinish timber sports floors before line marking or as part of routine maintenance.

Timber sports floors are durable, but they need periodic refinishing. The protective top layer wears, especially in heavy-traffic zones. Once the finish is worn, the timber underneath begins to absorb dirt, scratches deepen and any line markings on the floor become harder to read. Sanding and polishing restore the protective layer, even out the surface and refresh the appearance of the lines beneath the topcoat.

When sanding and polishing are appropriate

  • Screen and recoat — a light abrasion of the existing finish followed by a fresh sealer or finish coat. Suitable when the existing finish is intact but dull.
  • Full sand and refinish — sanding back to clean timber, then sealer, line repaint and topcoat. Used when the finish is worn through to bare timber or when the surface needs full re-leveling.
  • Localised repair — targeted refinishing of damaged sections, blended into surrounding areas.

Process

  1. Inspect for hollow boards, loose nails, gaps and any moisture problems.
  2. Vacuum the area and protect adjacent walls, doors and equipment.
  3. Sand or screen with the appropriate grit sequence — typically a coarse pass, a medium pass and a fine pass.
  4. Vacuum and tack the surface to remove dust before any sealer goes down.
  5. Apply sealer, then re-mark game lines if a repaint is part of the scope.
  6. Apply final polyurethane or equivalent finish coats. Allow proper drying between coats.
  7. Cure the floor before reopening to play, in line with the finish manufacturer's recommendation.

Benefits

Floor sanding and polishing slow allergen build-up on the surface by restoring the protective layer, allow design freedom if the finish or line layout is being changed, and extend the service life of the floor. For sports halls, this is often the more economical option compared with full floor replacement.

Coordination with line marking

When game lines are due to be repainted, we sequence the sanding and line work together so the new line paint sits beneath the protective topcoat rather than on top of it. This protects the markings and extends the time before another repaint is needed. See court marking and repair and repainting.
